Violet Hirst Announces 'Donegal' Album Release Tour

Chris Cudby / Tuesday 18th July, 2023 2:56PM

Tāmaki Makaurau via Tāhuna songwriter Violet Hirst will soon be unveiling her debut studio album Donegal, "a collection of songs that sit as a love-letter to Hirst's time spent between Pōneke and Te Waipounamu". Honing her craft with recent high profile support slots for Office Dog and D.C. Maxwell, Hirst has announced a five date Donegal launch tour, traversing Aotearoa to the four main centres plus Queenstown / Tāhuna — playing her new record in its entirety with with top tier bandmates Reuben Scott (Daffodils), Kane Strang (Office Dog), Mitchell Innes (Office Dog) and Madeleine Mirunok. Bundling together recent tunes 'Alternate Ways to Pray', 'Descending Song' and 'Brave Me' with seven newies (some of which can be heard in live form on 2021's Songs from the Futuna Chapel), Donegal was recorded and produced by De Stevens in Cromwell early last year, finally out in full just ahead of the tour on 7th August...

Violet Hirst and her all-star band are bringing to the debut album, Donegal (releasing August 7th), to life throughout Aotearoa this August.

Violet Hirst is a singer-songwriter based in Tāmaki Makaurau via Tāhuna, who's music is described as nostalgic and hypnotic. Donegal was produced and recorded in Cromwell, Central Otago '22 by De Stevens (in-house Roundhead engineer). It is a collection of songs that sit as a love-letter to Hirst's time spent between Pōneke and Te Waipounamu. Joining her to perform the album in its entirety will be Reuben Scott (Daffodils, Molly Payton, Salt Water Criminals) - who also features on several songs of the album; Dunedin singer/songwriter Kane Strang (Office Dog), Mitchell Innes (also Office Dog) and Madeleine Mirunok (all the way from Canada).

Violet’s first single, Descending Song, debuted at No.1 on the SRN charts in May. The second single, Alternate Ways to Pray, was released with a self-produced music video, directed by Hirst and creative companion Mark Whittet at a make-shift retirement home. From playing down in St Kevins Arcade alone to singing Kate Bush with her mother in Arrowtown - Hirst is a versatile artist capable who's voice is capable of holding any room.
