Mitski ponders "without love, is there anyone here?" on the Japan-born US songwriting star's seventh studio long player The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We. Out today via Dead Oceans, Mitski paints emotional canvases of vast scale on her new album — drawing from a well of inspiration encompassing spaghetti Western soundtracks, Arthur Russell, Stravinsky, Scott Walker, Caetano Veloso and US country music producer Faron Young. Recorded with producer Patrick Hyland, these vivid sonic backdrops serve to amplify the themes of solitude and loneliness expressed on The Land Is Inhospitable..., making small personal moments feel monumental and vice versa.

In typically magnificent voice throughout, Mitski is joined on the record by 17-person choir (arranged by the artist), and an orchestra conducted by Drew Erickson. Sure to be a staple of 2023 end of year highlights lists, the album feels like time and space unfolding, bundling together singles 'Bug Like an Angel', 'Heaven' and 'Star' with eight more earthshaking anthems into an almost surprisingly snappy 30 plus minutes. Last here in Aotearoa for Laneway Festival 2019, listen up and cross fingers for Mitski's long-awaited return...

Tune in this evening (NZST) to the unveiling of Mitski's new single My Love Mine All Mine...
