Liturgy Announce Auckland Headline Show
Initially outlining their own sonically uncompromising vision with founder Haela Ravenna Hunt-Hendrix's 2009 manifesto Transcendental Black Metal ("A Vision Of Apocalyptic Humanism"), Brooklyn, New York's Liturgy are at the forefront of bleeding-edge extreme metal. Hunt-Hendrix has announced her project's first ever Aotearoa event, playing a one off headline date at Tāmaki Makaurau's Whammy Bar on 22nd November. Titled in reference to "the ideal balance of Christian love and creative freedom", Liturgy's sixth studio album 93696 released in March of this year via Thrill Jockey — a sonically vast, compositionally intricate theological epic in four movements / 'angels' hailed by The Needle Drop's Anthony Fantano as "one of the best avant-garde metal albums you’ll hear this year". Arriving this spring at the tail end of their globe-spanning 93696 tour, secure your spot fast or risk missing one of the live highlights of 2023...

Press release:
Liturgy is the project of Haela Ravenna Hunt-Hendrix, whose yearning, energetic “transcendental black metal” exists in the space between metal, experimental, classical music and sacred ritual. The band is simultaneously a platform for fine art and theology.
Liturgy has broken boundaries and unintentionally provoked the purity of the genre at every step of its prolific and wildly experimental lifespan.
Nowhere has their fearless approach to discarding convention been more apparent than on this year’s ‘93696’ album - an indulgent splattering of complex riffs, chaotic percussive fury, glitched-out electronic peaks, and atypical orchestration, all intelligently perforated by Haela’s soul-piercing shrieks.
Following this year’s Basilica 24-hour drone festival in Hudson, NY and Copenhagen’s A Colossal Weekend festival, this special solo performance will be Liturgy’s New Zealand debut.
