Currently touring across Aotearoa, Canadian poet / musician C.R. Avery’s self-directed film The Bar Without A Neon Sign had its Aotearoa premiere at Tāmaki Makaurau’s The Capitol Cinema two nights ago. The Bar… features Avery as a streetwise vendor who encounters a time machine and meets unusual figures at a crossroads — unleashing a musical and artistic exploration spanning identity and genre. You can watch the trailer below, which surges through the decade to mention the spoken word elements of iconic music videos such as Beyonce’s Lemonade visualiser and Janelle Monae’s Dirty Computer emotion picture, until finally, our “antihero poet and musician” emerges from a smoke ring. This nebulous imagery evokes the effortless coolness and elusive mystery in which Avery sweats out.

C.R. Avery’s Original Motion Picture Soundtrack for The Bar Without A Neon Sign is finally officially out on local streaming services via 07:17 Records. Be whisked through time to the responsive harmonica and beatboxing groove of ‘Only Take What You Need’, vulnerable and brassy climb of ‘Farewell to a Poet from My Hometown’ and the climactic blues fusion of ‘Commercial Drive (Bohemian Central Lockdown). Then get raunchy with the explicit ‘Reverse Cowgirl Sunset’. A particularly powerful song for me was the delicate narrative of ‘The Postmodern Draft Dodger’s Anarchist Songbook (Take 2)’. There’s also the immersive spoken word pieces peppered throughout like ‘Robert Redford by Default (Golf Pro Blues)’, and ‘Pretty Simple Funeral Arrangements’. The Bar Without A Neon Sign showcases Avery’s expansive craft and talent that brings together the best of music, beatboxing and poetry.
