Varda are the Te Whanganui-a-Tara-based collaborative project of Alison (synths, drums and voice) and Unsanitary Napkin / Displeasure's Ru (bass, guitars and drums), gracing our Friday with their third single 'Cruelty', out just ahead of Saturday's Techno Echo mini-festival performance at Pyramid Club. Mirrorglass shards of dramatic guitar and elegant keys frame steely-eyed reflections on "the experience of abuse and the kind of justifications that get made, and how it’s a trap and a mindfuck". The pair have hinted at an EP in the works which we can't wait to hear — succumb to the ominous beauty of 'Cruelty' and catch Varda wrapping up 2023 alongside fellow sound explorers Sonya Waters, Japes, Waterfalls, and Lorazepam...
