Mykki Blanco Announces Debut New Zealand Tour
Consistently doing the mahi in bringing the most innovative talents to our shores, the teams behind Strange News Touring and Community Garden have united their powers to present the debut Aotearoa tour from rapper / performance artist / poet / activist Mykki Blanco. Announced earlier in the week to be part of the smashing lineup for Ōhinehou's Port Noise festival, the hugely influential US artist is bookending their South Island performance with headline shows at Tāmaki Makaurau's Neck Of The Woods and Te Whanganui-a-Tara's Meow, with special guests to be revealed. Arising from underground roots in Riot Grrrl and performance art to collaborate with such fellow superstars as Princess Nokia, Michael Stipe, Blood Orange, Kelsey Lu, Madonna and Kanye West (to name a few), Mykki Blanco will be here touring their new Postcards From Italia EP. Here's the official lowdown from the organisers...
"How many artists can claim to have collaborated with Kathleen Hanna, Arca, Michael Stipe, Madonna, Saul Williams, Blood Orange, Anohni, Ian Isiah, Cities Aviv, Ashnikko, Jónsi and even collected a cheque from Kanye West? Not many, if any, but Mykki Blanco really is that artist.
Since their first release as Mykki Blanco & The Mutant Angels in 2012 Mykki has stepped straight beyond rap’s more traditionalist corners of misogyny, homophobia and transphobia; sincerely helping lift the culture to a new era. All the while Mykki has continued moving from the heart, to new sound - without any of the confines and brackets of style or division.
First borne of a YouTube video art project inspired by Lil Kim’s ‘Kimmy Blanco’ alter-ego, Mykki has gone from posting vlogs and raps on social media, to a true poet princess, to club super-duper star - and has become quite the mellifluous Mediterranean as of late; with the release of their latest EP Postcards From Italia.
Mykki has been becoming Mykki throughout, generously blazing trails for a myriad of queer artists and listeners."
