Amiria Grenell Unveils New Album 'The Winter Light' + Single / Video 'The Ghost In You'
Winner of the Tūī award for Best Folk Album in 2011, Ōtautahi songwriter Amiria Grenell reemerges nearly a decade following her 2015 long player Autumn with new solo album The Winter Light. Crafted over three years with co-producer / multi-instrumentalist Ryan Fisherman and a cast of contributors at The Hut and in Grenell’s lounge, ten immersive songs draw upon folk, country and rock sensibilities on her long-awaited record. Opener ‘Ōamaru by Night’ features a voice memo captured outside after a gig at the Grainstore Gallery, while ‘Burnt Coffee’ leans into the memories of Banks Peninsula and birdsong.
Sitting near the start is today’s new single and video ‘The Ghost in You’, toasting the unique and wide-ranging experience of life — “To let the ghosts out to play every once in a while.” Filmed in Lyttelton and Diamond Harbour, Robyn Jordaan directs a tilted land of greenery, with dainty choreography generating some nourishing activity within the space, made with support from NZ On Air. Grenell and Fisherman are playing together in duo formation for The Winter Light album release tour, supported by Amy Grace (The Swan Sisters) for the South Island stretch. Procure a comfy seat at any of the below shows…
“(The Winter Light details) my days, my heart, my family and my surroundings — and sometimes I manage to make sense of it all. But when I release songs into the world, I don’t want people to see me — my hope is that they see themselves.”
