Listen To Death And The Maiden's New Album 'Uneven Ground'
Time moves at different speeds in Ōtepoti / Dunedin is what they say, a statement backed up by today's magnificent reemergence of Death and the Maiden, a scant six years following 2018's standout sophomore album Wisteria. The triforce gothic / electronic combo of Lucinda King (Thorn Dells), Hope Robertson (Birdation) and Danny Brady's (Thought Creature) new long player Uneven Ground channels the historic haunted aura of Chicks Hotel in Port Chalmers, where the nine track collection was laid down with producer Thomas Bell. Singer / bassist King's poetic visions synergise with chilly synth / guitars and (perhaps whatever the inverse is of) balearic beat-scapes, welcoming guests Marlin's Dreaming frontman Semisi Ma'ia'i and production powerhouses Signer and Alphabethead — whose virtuosic scratches imbue 'Not Like' with a blunted trip hop energy.
Incorporating their superb 2021 track 'Waratah' into the album, alongside lead single 'Leanest Cut' and seven new tunes wriggling their way under this listener's skin, Uneven Ground very much feels like an Aotearoa release highlight of 2024. A club-igniting live experience, as anyone who caught them at The Others Way 2018 festival will gush, don't miss Death and the Maiden touring nationwide with friends in July, and open your ears to Uneven Ground...
