Joe Kaptein Shares New Album 'Eternal Afternoon'

Tāmaki Makaurau's jazz ship is often interrelated in the best of ways, with collaboration providing the beating heart of ingenuous local music. An integral cog of Princess Chelsea's epic Dream Warriors band and key member of Soft Chaos trio with Nathan Haines, today prolific multi-instrumentalist Joe Kaptein introduces his newest album Eternal Afternoon to the world via Sarang Bang Records. Six tracks deep-dive into multiple genre styles informed by the '70s jazz-funk touch of greats Donald Byrd and Lonnie Liston Smith, and Kaptein’s love for krautrock and Bacharachian pop. 'Lonnie' offers some laid back brassiness, 'Unwavering' exemplifies the term "yacht-jazz funk" and 'Sundown' provides some wah goodness and plenty of double-stop soloing.

The title tune sees Kurt Dyer, Ben Frater, George Brajkovic and Elijah Whyte’s percussion laugh in the face of polyrhythm problems. Keep an ear out for the usual jazz instruments, but also bass clarinet by Shaun O’Kane, flute by the aforementioned Nathan Haines, and organ and glockenspiel by our Kaptein. Many of these contributors are often seen lighting up Ponsonby Social Club, but Kaptein will soon venture to the Neck of The Woods next Thursday with his nine-piece "band of demons". Sporting five original compositions and a crazy cover of Charles Stepney and Richard Rudolph's 'Oh, By The Way', Eternal Afternoon was recorded and engineered in part by Jacob Brown and mastered by Josh Llewellyn.
