Goodwill Unveils Single 'Obamas' + Announces Debut Album 'Kind Hands'
Ōtautahi songwriter Goodwill aka Will McGillivray has unfurled fresh single ‘Obamas’ and announced his debut album Kind Hands — out on 4th October via Winegum Records. As a labelmate of other such experimentally inclined local folk artists like Sam Bambery and Tom Lark, I find it unsurprising that Goodwill makes music that is sonically arresting and emotional. The story of a hospital, late family and the sea are propelled by gentle arpeggios in ‘Obamas’. The ballad feels more relaxed, reflective yet vulnerable than last month's predecessor 'Plans', but just as powerful.
Goodwill will be joining 2019 Silver Scroll-nominated Mousey (Sarena Close) at all stops on her forthcoming three-date The Dreams of Our Mothers' Mothers album release tour. A little bird in a tree told me to keep an eye out further for Goodwill’s own tour announcement soon too…
“I’ve shown this song to friends and had some people find it really sad and others find it more on the hopeful side of town, I like that there’s some ambiguity to that line ‘I’m so happy I could die’ — I won’t say which way I feel, but I can say that when I first wrote and sung that chorus it was probably the most elation I’ve felt from writing a song.”
