Listen To Mousey's New Album 'The Dreams Of Our Mothers' Mothers!'
Finalist for the Silver Scroll and Best Independent Debut awards for her breakout 2019 album Lemon Law, and special guest with the Exploding Rainbow Orchestra last week, Mousey aka Sarena Close today unveils her third studio album The Dreams of Our Mothers' Mothers! Mousey greets listeners with an open-hearted intimacy that feels widescreen in scope and ambition, summoning an oceanic grandeur comparable to Mitski on these new works — produced in collaboration with Will McGillivray (Goodwill) who played throughout the long player, also co-writer of 'Opener' and 'Die on that Hill'. A recent mother herself, the Ōtautahi songwriter confronts difficult feelings relating to family ties (and lack of) on the new eight song record. She explained to 95bFM's Zoë Larsen Cumming: "Family is complicated, and for me I have found myself in a position where I am not connected to any family that's here on the earth right now... people who do struggle with estrangement are responding to the music, which is amazing."
Lush orchestral arrangements co-mingle with atmospheric trip-hop sensibilities and a refreshingly adventurous approach to sound design — paring back to stark folk minimalism, then exploding into full colour on album centre-piece 'Island of Hope' parts 1 and 2. Closing single 'E.S.' almost feels ECM Records-like in its immediacy, a ballad "about embracing the way things have unfolded in my life, and while it carries some pain, it opens the door to new beginnings."
