Greta O'Leary Shares Debut Album 'River Dark'
Treating listeners to an assured run of solo tunes unfurled at her own pace over the past few years, Greta O'Leary's 2024 single 'Baptised at the Desktop Computer' positively leapt out of radio speakers, with a time-warping blend of lilting neo-folk and western-tinted boogie-rock. A regular presence on local stages around Aotearoa — recently supporting Vera Ellen at Te Papa Museum — O'Leary now graces NZ Music Month / Te Marama Puoro o Aotearoa with her debut album River Dark, laid down with producer Jol Mulholland at LAB Studios and featuring instrumental contributions from local heavyweights Cass Basil, Alistair Deverick, Anita Clark, Callum Passells, and guest vocals from AHARI on new single 'IDKALA'.
"Water and poetry keep me alive" O'Leary sings in the haunting title track, sounding stripped-back and spare, ensconced in Antipodean gothic mystery. That cautionary ballad's hushed intimacy is perhaps indicative of the record as a whole — balancing tones shadowy and bright, gracefully flowing with clear-eyed, poetic purpose. Dive into the spellbinding depths of River Dark, order the vinyl LP edition HERE and don’t miss O'Leary’s release show at Tāmaki Makaurau’s Old Folk’s Association later this month…
“My first record, a collection of personal, ridiculous and truth telling songs. It took a long time to get here. I was a child shy and unclear, completely confused, absolutely not onboard with future, with goals or activity. I was in the field below the house, I was at the pond with the dog, I played make believe longer than most. I was taught to be quiet”.
