BLOODBAGS Unveil Self-Titled Debut Album + Touring Nationwide

Chris Cudby / Friday 23rd May, 2025 10:55AM

Quite unbelievably, BLOODBAGS is the first official long player from Tāmaki Makaurau garage-punks Andrew Tolley, Sam Ralston and Matt Rapley, arriving gloriously untamed following more than a decade of redlining single / EP releases and countless sweaty live gigs. Masters of their craft, BLOODBAGS blast our stereo speakers with nine cranking alley cat odes to such everyday aspects as "dysfunction, alienation, karmic retribution, the relentless noise of the world, hollow celebrity, & unnecessary technology" — appropriately recorded in a basement, with Matthew Heine (SPUD, Solid Gold Hell) on production duties.

Opener 'Primitive Screwhead' finds the missing link between K. Road grit and Memphis strut, 'Inconsequential Man' is like a steamroller for crushing wimps, 'Yr Shit Just Quit' discombobulates with dizzying no-wave squall — but don't get the wrong idea, magnificent closer 'Art Skool Assholes' rejects hoity-toity pretension — and their cover of 'Crawl' by '80s NYC blues-punks Black Snakes oozes with antisocial intent. An insta-classic for all those with ears to listen, BLOODBAGS are toasting their debut album with gigs across the nation, assembling top tier supports in Tāmaki, Ōtepoti and Ōtautahi. Don't miss them letting rip this winter, plus cop the limited vinyl LP edition HERE / on the door...

Press release:

Only took a dozen years to finally spit out a complete full length of the loose noise, rowdy roknrol these Tamaki Makaurau vets can conjure up in their weathered paws. Heap of ideas birthed in them lean lockdown COVID years with nowhere to direct them. Once past that standstill in time, it still took an age to gets back on the good foot & gits them ideas tangible. But once out in the bush, West Auckland styles, holed up in a basement studio with like-minded vet Matthew Heine in 2023/2024, he of noted swamp punk heathens SPUD & Solid Gold Hell, the BLOODBAGS crew gots to lay down a solid snaking clutch of thud & thwack. Eight tracks, seven originals, a cover of obscure 1980s feral NYC blues punk freaks BLACK SNAKES. It ain’t hardcore, it ain’t metal, there’s a thousand strong of those such combos now roaming thee Aotearoan ‘burbs doin’ that biz, tho’ this album taps into similar heft & fury, but ups the swing, embraces a loose, sprawling mindset & pushes the groove. In the words of Mr Kilmister, “we play rock & roll”. Tunes ‘bout dysfunction, alienation, karmic retribution, the relentless noise of the world, hollow celebrity, & unnecessary technology.
