Ringlets Share New Album 'The Lord Is My German Shepherd (Time For Walkies)' + Announce Tour
Formidable figures in Aotearoa post-punk over the past few years, Ringlets threw down a commanding performance at JUNK Festival earlier this month and now follow through with The Lord Is My German Shepherd (Time for Walkies), the Tāmaki collective's second album out today via Flying Nun Records and Leather Jacket Records. Lead singer Leith Towers spins poetically pointed tales of harsh and morally dubious circumstances, manipulative egos and more, unafraid to crank impassioned melodrama to the max and beyond like a bardic Nigel Tufnel when the occasion demands ("Tongue is a weapon / You're armed and dangerous"). Likewise, bandmates Arabella Poulsen, Arlo Grey and László Reynolds adeptly conjure a wide variety of tones, from noisenik squall to stately avant-rock to stark moments of brow-furrowing contemplative beauty, with Poulsen handling mic duties on spiky no wave standout 'Sucking on a Surly Pout'.
There's an abundance of ambition on display throughout Ringlets' excellently titled sophomore release — great song titles in general in fact — and they consistently nail it, recorded with the expert ear of Michael Logie (The Mint Chicks) and mixed at Abbey Road Studios by Isaac Keating. Catch Ringlets at their just-announced album release tour, be sure to nab the vinyl LP edition of The Lord Is My German Shepherd (Time for Walkies) at your friendly local record shop, and revisit possibly the best local music video of the year, 'I Was on That Roof Once' starring Fats White below...
