Ōtepoti Dunedin's Regent Theatre hosted the world premiere of Life In One Chord on Saturday night, director Margaret Gordon's documentary about Aotearoa alt-rock icon Shayne P. Carter. Charting Carter's journey from formative punk years with Bored Games, his songwriting synergy with Wayne Elsey (RIP) in The DoubleHappys, Straitjacket Fits' brush with global fame, his reinvention as Dimmer and beyond, it looks like the whole town turned out for the film's sold-out first screening.
The gala event featured music / sound performances by Sogg (who have just released their knockout debut album Kill Yr Oppressor) with Sivle Talk, Keira Wallace and youbeepastablaster. There will be a second Regent screening of this must-see film (we caught it last night at Auckland's The Hollywood) this coming Tuesday, plus Carter himself is playing a pair of already sold out hometown gigs at The Crown Hotel, and Pōneke's Great Sound Great festival next month.
Photographer Ethan Montañer documented Saturday night's glitz and glamour, complete with an on-stage appearance by Carter's teddy bear (!) — click on the thumbnail pics below to view the full gallery...
