Recipient of a glowing five star review from RNZ's award-winning and straight-shooting Tony Stamp, Collection from Second Year is the debut album from birdlings flat, the project of Ōtautahi songwriter / producer Marcus Burton. Balancing studio lushness with candid, field recording-like qualities — sometimes both at the same time (eg. 'Can understand') — birdlings flat teleports listeners to a fully realised avant-folk world of their own. Indeed, multiple tracks are marked 'voice memo' and 'demo', yet sound perfectly formed as is (much more so than many artists' actual studio works in fact), contributing much to the record's organic, otherworldly aura.
