Theia Unveils Debut Album 'Girl, In A Savage World' + Announces Release Show

Already revered as a major figure in Aotearoa music, winning the Best Independent Debut award for her te ao Māori project TE KAAHU in 2023, Theia (Waikato, Ngaati Tiipaa, Ngaati Aaamaru) now finally rewards fans with her debut solo album. The fulfilment of nine years of singles and EP releases, themes of protest and resistance are central to Girl, In A Savage World. A songwriting activist, Theia urgently calls for tino rangatiratanga, female empowerment and pushes against religious oppression across ten sonically expansive, gorgeously realised tracks — including recent singles 'BALDH3AD!', 'Hoki Whenua Mai (Return The Land)', 'Pray 4 Me', 'Patupaiarehe', and 'My Sister's Hands In Mine' featuring Jolie Holland.

Weaving together a variety of styles, from alt-folk lushness to booming post-industrial club beats and grunty rock fuzz — all amplified by Theia's stunning vocals and cutting wordplay — Māori instrumentation is a significant element of Girl, In A Savage World's ever-mutating sound world. Now based in LA, Theia has announced she's playing a special album release show with full band at Tāmaki Makaurau's Whammy Bar on 27th February.
