Delaney Davidson Announces 'Baby Heavyweight' Album Release Tour + Shares Title Track

Chris Cudby / Wednesday 22nd April, 2026 8:41AM

Sounding not unlike a NYC mutant disco / punk-funk club had unexpectedly opened up on the main drag in Ōhinehou Lyttelton, 'Baby Heavyweight' is a seriously grooving brand new single from Delaney Davidson. The title track to the multi-award winning New Zealand Arts Foundation Laureate's just-announced eleventh studio album, Davidson has assembled a cracking live band featuring Heather Webb, Cass Basil, Alex Freer and Ryan Fisherman, sure to get crowds boogieing around the motu as they tour his forthcoming record from 3rd July onwards.

Davidson's second studio album produced with Merk (Mark Perkins), the theme of "Lucifer seeking his own redemption through recontextualising his past" threads throughout Baby Heavyweight, presenting the southern artist in his "shaman and trickster" aspect, featuring co-writing credits by fellow luminaries Marlon Williams, Kommi, Barry Saunders, Sean Wheeler, Tami Neilson, and Pierre Omer. Launching into the world on 26th June, the album is available for preorder on vinyl LP and compact disc plus digitally from today. Alleviate any mid-week blues with 'Baby Heavyweight' and snag a spot to see Davidson with band this winter...

Press release:

Delaney Davidson is a New Zealand Singer Songwriter, Musician, and Visual Artist.

A wry sense of humour, some theatre of unease, and a voice classed as “not conventionally beautiful” all combine to breathe life and space into the niche he has carved out for himself, winning him critical acclaim across the world for his original take on things. His seminal influence and work with Marlon Williams on their “Sad But True” series as well as his visionary production on Tami Neilson’s acclaimed album’s “Dynamite”, “Don’t Be Afraid” and “Chickaboom!”, have also earned him great praise from the media and huge respect amongst his peers. Sync placements in The Expanse, Nashville TV Series, Bad Sisters, and Brokenwood Mysteries have taken Delaney’s music globally.

Baby Heavyweight, born in a kitchen in Switzerland, is Delaney Davidson’s 11th solo album. Somewhat more groovy than his previous releases, this is the second album he has made with Merk (Mark Perkins). Building on the smooth depth of the previous album “Out Of My Head”, and taking it into a new realm of story telling and emotive music.

Hitting the road with a stacked band featuring Heather Webb, Cass Basil, Alex Freer and Ryan Fisherman, Delaney sets his sights on a show that will deliver the album in all its complexity and nuance. Truly something to be witnessed. Do Not Miss Out.
