Listen to Hannah Everingham's New Album 'Big Surprise'

Treading her own path on earlier records Siempre Tiene Flores and Between Bodies, Canterbury songwriter Hannah Everingham's world feels like it has opened up on album number three in just four years Big Surprise. Everingham indeed draws upon "languages of pop-rock and sci-fi, psychedelic folk and post-punk" for Big Surprise, a refreshingly open-eared palette bound together by warm tones and Balearic-adjacent, undulating mutant-funk grooves — zigging and zagging in accompaniment to the artist's poetical, sometimes exuberant / sometimes pensive / sometimes playful lyrical reflections.

Everingham's sonic chemistry with bandmates Thomas Isbister and Michael Kime (with percussionist Joseph McCullum on selected tunes) of course deserves large credit for the album's glowing aura, laid down in full takes with engineer Josh Logan at children’s author Margaret Mahy's former home in the scenic setting of Governor’s Bay.

A record which wholeheartedly embraces the inevitability of change — this listener is reminded of director John Wilson's musings on the concept of samsara in his documentary The History of Concrete — Everingham is soon embarking on a nationwide run of Big Surprise launch shows. Currently only listenable on Bandcamp, Big Surprise will be out on streaming services this Friday.
