Press Release:
IT CAME FROM THE ATTIC
A downloadable compilation, available through
Undertheradar.co.nz from August 20th.
MUZAI Records and The Attic come together in August to bring to New Zealand a collection of some of the bands that are emerging, have emerged or about to emerge from what is regarded as “the capital of New Zealand alternative music history”, Dunedin.
With acts such as Opposite Sex and Two Cartoons flying the blue-and-yellow flag northwards, Dunedin music is once again becoming a focal point of emerging musical talent in New Zealand. In fact, to even state the importance of Dunedin and the acts it has harboured seems redundant – if you're reading this, you know already the talent that has emerged from the city.
It Came From The Attic is a collection of songs from some of the bands from Dunedin you might not have discovered yet though. It by no means is a “best of” compilation; instead, it's a reference point to let people know what else is going on and, just as important, what The Attic is involved with.
Founded roughly in May 2011, The Attic, as Daniel Alexander puts it, “is something that has kinda just grew without us really realising. We are finding it is a space we can use to do whatever we want and we are really keen to share it as much as possible. While I can't speak for the others, I definately look to other establishments such as Third Man and Daytrotter in the States as well as many local art collectives (past and present) for inspiriation”
“The idea of being a one stop shop is really important and exciting; a band could come here, record, produce the artwork , do promo and assemble CD cases for release. I guess it is about pooling resources and creating things that you could never achieve on your own” Alexander says – which sits in harmony with the values MUZAI Records formed on back in 2009.
All of the tracks were recorded in the space above “a cougar disco club in the middle of town” over a 3 month period. Several of the bands are all in-house musicians with members of those bands having a space up in The Attic. The other musicians on the compilation are extended Attic family members... some of whom were met through The Attic Rattle shows and others close friends for a long time.
