Weekly Round Up: Friday 26th September

Friday 26th September, 2014 4:01PM

It has been a fairly busy week of international announcements. First off, hip hop duo Run The Jewels confirmed rumours they be hitting these shores for a couple of shows in January, and on top of that they will be bringing Joey Bada$$ along for the ride. Also in the new year, Brit-pop outfit The Kooks will be making one special appearance at Auckland's Vector Arena with support from Die! Die! Die!. And in February legendary guitarist Johnny Marr, who is a founding member of The Smiths is heading over for a solo show. February will also see these shores visited by neo-classical guitar hero Yngwie Malmsteen ahead of his Australian jaunt. Just before Christmas, indie-rock outfit The War On Drugs will be popping by for a quickie in Auckland. A little closer on the event calendar is a visit from heavy metal masters Anvil, who will be making three stops in the country with music from their 2013 album Hope In Hell. In terms of local tours, Clap Clap Riot are playing four shows around the nation with Buzz Moller of Voom in October.

In release news, we were stoked to hear the new EP from Jeremy Toy of She's So Rad, which was put out under the moniker Leonard Charles. Toy, who was the victim of a brutal assault last year worked on the vapourwave-ish tracks while recovering, using the process as a healing tool. Also out this week was an excellent record from a bunch of record store clerks, who recorded under the name Markdown. The 13 breakneck tracks included on the self-titled album talk about drinking coffee, plastic bags and sticker-swapping customers, and will be out on cassette or you can listen on Bandcamp. Auckland five-piece Trust Punks celebrated their recent signing to Spunk Records by premiering new single 'Gordian Knot', which is from the group's debut album Discipline, due out November. Looking overseas, the Melvins shared gnarly cut 'Sesame Street Meat', the second single from upcoming record Hold It In, which was made with the aid of two members of Butthole Surfers. And finally, Ariel Pink gave us a peek at his sleazy side with a new video for 'Put Your Number In My Phone', from his forthcoming album pom pom.

This week's Caught Live is some fan-shot footage of Ty Segall performing a quick Bowie-medley in Chicago to coincide with David Bowie Day. It doesn't get much better than that...
