Brandon De La Cruz (USA/Kirikiriroa) + Gloria Florence (Cindy)
with DJ Mr Crawley @ Goblin
Friday 10 July, 8pm
Brandon De La Cruz is an American folk artist whose lyricism is uniquely shaped by his interest in mythology, ceremony and RH Blyth’s translations of Japanese haiku. He grew up in the suburbs of Southern California's Inland Empire and has lived and performed regularly in Berkeley, CA, Portland, OR and for a few years now has called Aotearoa something of a home.
His recent album 'Blues Irises In Hologram' is a sublime and refreshingly succinct affair. The album is comprised of eight songs born of a wide range of inspirational nexuses including a 10-day silent Vipassana retreat, an afternoon in Simryn Gill’s immersive recreative art installation, Maria’s Garden, and Mississippi John Hurt’s recordings for the Library of Congress.
Tāmaki Makaurau’s best kept secret in the alt-folk scene, Gloria Florence has performed in many weid and wonderful spaces, including a tour of Japan’s underground venues with punk band Cindy and playing as a part of Chris Priestly’s Forgotten Heroes at the Auckland Folk Festival. Blending a background of country and folk with punk edge and modern cadence, Gloria Florence is a whimsical and generous performer.
Come along, get lost in song, and then dance the night away afterwards to the tunes of Mr Crawley.
