November/December News
The website for global independent digital rights body Merlin (of which IMNZ Chair Mark Kneebone is a member) is now live at (www)merlinnetwork.org; the site will soon be available in several languages.
Hollie Smith has recorded 3 tracks with James Poyser, who has written and produced for Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, Common, The Roots, Jill Scott, Mariah Carey, and Queen Latifah amongst others. After her theatre tour with SJD ended, Smith performed at an Air New Zealand function in Vancouver followed by a showcase in LA. She’s home to play the Martinborough Food and Wine festival in December. Cut Off Your Hands relocated to the UK, and their first single with 679 Recordings (The Streets, Polyphonic Spree), Oh Girl, sold out in less than 24 hours. The band have been touring relentlessly with Foals, and played NYC’s CMJ plus Iceland’s epic Airwaves festival. They’ll make a brief visit back to Australia and NZ to tour with Levity label mates Mercy Arms and appear at the Falls Festival and Big Day Out before returning to the UK to continue work on their debut LP, to be dropped next year on 679. Lewis McCallum’s track Fly or Die from the ‘Wake’ album was reviewed in tastemaker magazine Urb. So So Modern are in the middle of a huge European tour, which includes dates with the Robocop Kraus.
The Brunettes will finish their UK/European tour then head back to the Southern hemisphere for shows in Australia and here. They’ve had very positive press from the NME and London's Time Out guide; and over 250,000 Youtube viewings of the video for Her Hairagami Set. New York magazine Bust ran an 8-page photo-shoot with Heather and Jonathan, and photographer Kevin Abosch (known for portraits of Johnny Depp, Gwyneth Paltrow and Cameron Diaz) has taken photos of the group too. At home the band were honoured with the Outstanding Achievement Award at the b-Net awards, and they have a homecoming show on December 15 with Voom and newcomers the Conjurors (which features ex-members of the Ruby Suns, The Tokey Tones, Teenwolf, the Whipping Cats, Dictaphone Blues and The Cosbys). The Ruby Suns have a new 3-piece line-up and a new EP, ‘Lichen Ears’. Voom and the Reduction Agents have tracks on the very popular ‘Outrageous Fortune’ soundtrack; and Lawrence Arabia played a show in London with Jennifer Gentle.
Having sold out two London shows and an Amsterdam show, and receiving rave reviews around Europe, Shapeshifter were then a headline act for Australia’s Parklife Festival in October alongside M.I.A. and Justice; the festival covers 5 states, each with 30,000+ crowds, and the band picked up a ‘festival highlight’ tag. This summer Shapeshifter will perform at some of our top holiday locations before settling in to write their fourth studio album. They’ll be supported by MC Tiki who’s just released his acclaimed album ‘Past, Present and Future’ which stormed into the national top 10; on the decks will be legendary DJ Manuel Bundy.
A few Australian live performances of note have been announced. Cut Off Your Hands play all the Big Day Out dates, as well as the massive Falls Festival; Te Vaka will perform at the Woodford Festival in Brisbane on December 29, 30 and 31 - Australia's largest festival with 2,000 artists over 6 days. The Breakin Wreckwordz showcase to play a series of shows in Sydney and Melbourne this December features Red Eye Society, Tourettes, The Usual Suspects, Cyphanetik and DJ Substance - this will be the first time an Australian audience will have the opportunity to see the most part of the Breakin Wreckwordz collective live, and coming off last month’s It's a Monster NZ Tour, the boys are set to deliver. LOOP’s 'All Blacks - The Music' compilation was distributed through Shock records in Australia, with tracks receiving good airplay on many community stations.
Scribe’s second single My S**t has hit the Aussie airwaves, on telly channels Rage and Channel and radio station Mood Media; F.R.E.S.H. continued to pick up spins too. His album ‘Rhyme Book’ was released in October and rocked its way into the Australian Top Ten; Scribe also co-headlined an Australian tour with Talib Kweli, and a live performance on MTV’s The Lair. Rapper Mr Sicc’s underground hit Ear To The Street was featured on DJ Peter Gunz’ ‘Represent’ mix CD out now in Australia. He has performances coming up in Sydney and Brisbane soon. Back home, in December, 833 will bring out ‘Mr Sicc Presents: J-Dubb - Old School Machete Funk’.'
Minuit’s new website has beaten all other contenders (including The Pet Shop Boys!) to receive the top prize for Best Music Website at the prestigious Pixel Design Awards in the US. Designed by RESN in Wellington (who have also done work for The Black Seeds, Phoenix Foundation and The Upbeats) the site is a 'mini-Minuit world' where you can choose one of the cute characters from ‘The Guards Themselves’ album cover to show you around. The band have returned from a triumphant tour of Europe and the UK; and with the release of several remix 12”s in the UK, and the imminent release of their album there in 2008, Minuit have received support from breakbeat pioneers Adam Freeland, FreQ Nasty, Tayo and Rennie Pilgrim. Jay Cunning, KISS FM’s Breakbeat show host, said: “Minuit will do what The Crystal Method and NuBreed did for their countries - put New Zealand firmly on the dance scene's map.” Their live sets for Annie Nightingale's Radio 1 show and for BBC's 6 Music will air in December. Through Finland to Russia, Berlin to Barcelona, the Minuit live show rocked some serious PA systems; and the band may very well now have a vodka shot named after them in St Petersburg.
Charmaine Ford’s ‘Busy Silence’ was named the New Zealand Music Awards Best Jazz Album of the Year at the Wellington International Jazz Festival. Moana Maniapoto and Michael Houston were among the five artists honoured for their achievements at the eighth annual Arts Foundation of New Zealand Laureate Awards on November 21; and Michael Houstoun releases his new album ‘Inland’ on December 7, which realises his long-held goal to record the music of composers he respects and with whom he has forged close relationships. ‘Inland’ features compositions by John Psathas, Douglas Lilburn, Gao Ping, Ken Young, Victoria Kelly and Mike Nock. Phase 4 recording grants have gone to IMNZ artists Nesian Mystik, Shapeshifter and Solstate; and we’d like to congratulate our bNet winners: Little Bushman, Coco Solid, Die! Die! Die!, Pig Out, Shapeshifter, So So Modern, Hollie Smith, Collapsing Cities, David Kilgour, Bachelorette, Sean Donnelly (SJD), and The Brunettes. Hannah Curwood’s album has been licensed for use on Shortland St, and she’ll be touring Central Otago in February – watch this space for dates.
There’s no shortage of excellent new releases which would make great stocking stuffers this Christmas. The Lookie Loos ‘Timing Is Everything’ EP was written, recorded and engineered within the confines of the Waikato Institute of Technology over a 3-month period; the band have played with acts such as the Coshercot Honeys, Fighting the Shakes, The Vacants and White Birds and Lemons. P-Bass Expressway have released their new album ‘Snag Bag’. The band began with a friendship between Paul Bimler aka Nava Thomas aka Confucius and Ariel White while they were living in an ashram together in the early ‘90s. They’ve played alongside the likes of Shapeshifter, Salmonella Dub, Hollie Smith and Kora, at events including Rippon and Unity; and they’ve worked hard to overcome the distance between members who are spread over four cities in Australasia.
Orpheus Entertainment are about to release the next single for OMC, Please, featuring rapper Boy C (3 the Hard Way) and Lucy Lawless. The set includes new music from Brotha D, Savage, Ganxsta Ridd (Boo Yaa Tribe), Mareko, Baby Down(Brownzville), Deceptikonz, Monsta Ganjah, Aaradhna, Alphrisk, Akon, Sweet & Irie, Devolo and MZRE. The album features appearances by Savage, Frum Tha Stablez, Deceptikonz, Axeman, John Matrix and MZRE with production from Mareko, DJ Montana and DJ Shady 1. The Horsemen Family will tour over summer.
The Broken Heartbreakers are based around the songwriting of John Guy Howell and Rachel Bailey. This self-titled album is their second; and they’ve supported Lou Barlow and The Handsome Family. Pianist and multi-instrumentalist Jonathan Crayford’s new release, ‘Big Foot’, features his long time friend and cohort Riki Gooch (Eru Dangerspiel, ex-TrinityRoots), plus singers Emma Paki, Lisa Tomlins and Hollie Smith. During the ‘90s Crayford lived and worked in New York, playing and recording with the likes of Mambo Macoco, Groove Collective, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Bill Ware, Jay Rodriguez, Eddie Bobe and the Dave Binney group. The Big Foot Band will perform at Parihaka ’08.
Recorded/produced between London and Auckland over the last year and out on December 3, Nathan Haines’ new album ‘Right Now’ features British artists Ty, Marlena Shaw, Vanessa Freeman and Mike Patto; with Kiwis Chris Cox, Tama Waipara, Kevin Field, Joel Haines and others contributing. The new Little Bushman album ’Pendulum’ is out the same day; it was recorded in June this year by Lee Prebble (Black Seeds, Fly My Pretties, Phoenix Foundation, the Inkling), and Little Bushman are touring over summer. Tim Guy is touring New Zealand through December to promote his new album 'Hummabyes', with his band featuring Anna Coddington and Ned Ngatae, plus Anna and special guests providing support. Monkey Records has licensed a Onelung track to Yves St Laurent in Korea for an ad campaign and signed a distribution deal in that territory to release Onelung's last two albums; and they've also recently signed the Benka Boradovsky Bordello Band who will be touring in January/February on the Gypsy Fever Summer Tour with DJ Balkanetic. Creative NZ has funded Monkey Records for a CD/DVD compilation 'Monkey Magic II', and a late summer national tour.
‘Ill Gotten Gains’ is the result of 9 years of hard knocks for Missing Teeth. Since the release of their popular self-titled album back in ‘01, the boys have put out 3 7" releases, two compilations (from their own label, Puppy Killer Records) and the aptly titled ‘Disaster’ EP; and they’ve supported the likes of Unseen, Dropkick Murphys, Hot Water Music, Sick Of It All, The Bronx, Good Riddance, Bouncing Souls, Nation Blue, Strung Out, Smugglers, Sommerset, Frenzal Rhomb, UK Subs, Anti Nowhere League, The Exploited, Sticky Filth, Mint Chicks and Bleeders.

Paul McLaney’s new album 'Diamond Side', his second on LOOP, recorded in LA with producer/engineer Michael Frondelli (Crowded House, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones). Paul is touring the album with an epic trip around New Zealand from Russell in the north to Dunedin in the south. His new video was filmed in Death Valley in the US, where the temperature was so hot that Paul had to have the soles of his boots resoled after the film shoot due to them burning (no joke). The Danny McCrum Band have released their new album ‘Awake & Restless’. The band have worked with artists including Jimmy Barnes, Tommy Emmanuel, Nora Jones, John Mayer, Katie Melua and many more; and it’s been announced that Danny McCrum and Ben Jurisich will be opening for Bryan Ferry and Joan Armatrading at the Logan Campbell Centre on December 3rd and 4th.
It’s been 7 years since the last Jay Clarkson release but those familiar with New Zealand music history will know her name; Clarkson was a member of The Playthings, They Were Expendable/The Expendables and Breathing Cage, and in 1989 Breathing Cage won the Rheineck Rock Award. She teamed up with Johannes Contag (Cloudboy, Mink), and now Jay Clarkson and the Matches are touring to release the album ‘Over the Mountain’ (Arch Hill). Two stalwarts of New Zealand music, Otis Mace and Bill Direen, have been beetling along the length of the country. Direen’s been living in Dunedin this year, after a stint writing novels and recording songs in Europe. He’s been lauded by bands like Yo La Tengo, and was recently the subject of a radio special hosted by Graeme Hill and Chris Knox. His latest album is ‘Human Kindness’ and he’s been on tour with a new line-up of his early band ‘The Builders’. Otis Mace, who played in London using such catchy publicity lines as “Otis Mace, Guitar Ace - remember the name 'cause you might forget the face!”, has a new album, chock full of nuggets – ‘Bird In Bush Road’.
The Low Spark started as the Tomahawks in Dunedin; their track Yesterday's Drink reached number 1 on Radio One. Their album ‘Out in the Ozone’ was mixed and mastered by Dale Cotton (Conray, HDU, Dimmer, Paul McLaney, Die!Die!Die!); Graeme Downes lent his song-writing and production skills. Psych-pop pioneers The Puddle - a revolving line-up assembled since 1984 around the unstable core of George D Henderson – have released ‘No Love – No Hate’, the first new Puddle material in almost 15 years. Otara-based Pacific reggae band Three Houses Down have released their debut album ‘Dreadtown’; which includes a song in their native tongue, Tongan.
