The Lost Chord: A Study of Scordatura Practices in String Music from Late Seventeenth Century Bologna
Abstract:
Dr Polly Sussex discusses repertoire for the violoncello in Bologna and its associate instrumentation.
Biography:
After completing her PhD on the cello sonatas of Luigi Boccherini at Otago University, Polly Sussex moved to perform exclusively on original instruments rather than modern ones.
Polly now specialises in baroque cello and viola da gamba. During 2007-2009, she spent 18 months furthering her studies of viola da gamba in Northern Germany and Switzerland at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. Polly is an artist teacher at The University of Auckland’s School of Music, and continues to perform throughout New Zealand. She is currently researching early repertoire for the baroque cello, and will also soon publish an article detailing the single seventeenth century viola da gamba to be held in a New Zealand Museum - the Cole Viol at the Auckland War Memorial Museum.
