Friday Release Roundup - Jonathan Bree, Brandn Shiraz, Moider Mother + More

Here we are back again, chillin' in the end of week release roundup zone, now fully cognizant as to why the words "March Madness" were mysteriously (yet confidently) scrawled in the UTR office calendar. Check out our past seven days' coverage of DARTZ, Surf Friends, Tiny Ruins, Hans Pucket, Guardian Singles, Vera Ellen, Sabreen Islam and Midwave Breaks, plus even more crucial recent Aotearoa releases below — including Jonathan Bree x Princess Chelsea, Brandn Shiraz, Fazerdaze, OP Lilypad, Moider MotherDEATHTRIPPA and Bad Taste.

What's even better than a new Jonathan Bree song? A new Jonathan Bree song featuring the indisputably legendary Nile Rodgers of Chic (don't even try and dispute it) and the musical majesty of Princess Chelsea. 'Miss You' is the latest single (featuring guitar and co-production by Rodgers) from the bemasked Aotearoa tunesmith's forthcoming album Pre-Code Hollywood, out on 14th April. There's a stunner of an accompanying video too, featuring an appearance from Dick Driver of Radio With Pictures — vinyl LP / CD preorders for the new record HERE.

Delayed slightly due to the new song title's accidental similarity to real world events in Tāmaki Makaurau, 'Flood Into' is the incredibly catchy first single we've heard from Fazerdaze since the Ōtautahi-based songwriting star unveiled her Break! EP late last year.

Regarded by those in the know as one of Aotearoa's finest rhyme slingers in '23, Brandn Shiraz drops his self-titled debut solo EP today following a straight up killer run of releases, from 2016's Jive Days (if not earlier) as a teen onwards — somebody reissue those classic Shiraz & LSJ albums on vinyl already. Always ahead of the pack, Shiraz's new seven track collection features contributions from Diggy Dupé, TheWesternGuide, Ranuimarz and Soufsyde P.

Fresh signee to the Sunreturn stable (who've also welcomed on board Mokotron), OP Lilypad is the new solo production nom de plume of Tāmaki Makaurau's Jonathan Glenday (Long Distance Runner, Fly Nights). They've shared the tranquil and meditative lead track 'dub' from forthcoming debut OPLP EP, out in full on 13th April — you need the accompanying frog artwork by M. Coombes in your life.

Moider Mother is the new musical project / "wholesome family band" of Shocking Pinks helmsman Nick Harte, Hannah Harte, Noah McKay and Ethan McKay, whose superb three song debut Maimed Infant EP emerged online earlier this week. Lovers of depraved noisenik post-punk dance and / or artistically uncompromising cinematic monstrosities need to hit play immediately.

The cybergrind project of Pōneke's Ian Moore, DEATHTRIPPA's synapse-scrambling new seven track album DEATHTRIPPA SZN dropped a couple of weeks ago and is the creation of a musical mastermind. You can catch them letting rip tonight at Valhalla with Bad Taste — an absolutely inspired pairing. Preorder yourself a tape edition via the Bandcamp link.

Speaking of which — here's the aforementioned Bad Taste's hook-heavy new single 'Weird Weekends' from the team supreme of Alphabethead and Young Gho$t. Go see them tonight at Valhalla and have yourself a good one.
