Kāwai Sound System presents: Whenua Step 1!, a sound system dance built by the next generation of youngins in Ōtautahi. This is off the shoulders of the innovation of carribean music + influence, featuring roots, dancehall, and jungle.
Rooted in the traditions of sound system culture while grounded in Aotearoa, this session brings together selectors and dancers for a night where the music is played the way it’s meant to be heard: inclusive, communal, and intentional.
We look forward to taking you through the journey of music that means the most of us as the crew, honouring the legacy and trailblazing of early carribean activists + artists as well as the later effects on the population of Aotearoa, giving voices and frequencies that empower and connect. Following this, we test the limits of our rig through the heavy pressure of dancehall bassline + whine. To finish off, we acknowledge the bridge + connection between Reggae and UK Bass through the heavy pace of junglist riddims.
Whenua Step is a mihi aroha to the influences of both Jamaican + UK sound system culture. We use this night to acknowledge, connect, and skank together as people of Ōtautahi.
This has always been deeper than the music. This is history + people. Together as one.
