The MOVING AIR ENSEMBLE (est 2016) is a musical ‘chamber group’ led by CAMPBELL KNEALE with an open and revolving membership of between 10-20 players, ranging from highly experienced musicians to shakey first-timers.
Formed around the maxim that “music is simply moving air” and imparting the central idea to participants that to be a musician is to be one who uses moving air as their medium. CAMPBELL KNEALE used his time at The Audio Foundations artist-in-residence programme (2016) to compose a series of ever-evolving musical pieces that strip what we understand to be ‘music’ back to its rawest fundamentals in order to produce sound-suites that require little more than a certain level of discipline and a desire to ‘move some air’ to perform and yet result in rich and complex listening experiences for a live audience.
Using a simple household item, the humble vacuum cleaner, as a source of all the musical inspiration a prospective performer might need, the MOVING AIR ENSEMBLE imparts to participants a range of strategies to unlock the melodic potential of this contraption. It provides ways of translating these sounds to the widest possible range of both traditional and idiosyncratic musical instruments and then oversees the performance of a unique musical piece for a live audience. The results are deeply evocative, transcendent, gently humorous, and so much greater than the sum of its parts.
