Stephen Young is an award-winning songwriter based in Dunedin (on the island of Te Wai Pounamu, New Zealand).

He was co-founder of, and keyboard player in the theatrical rock band Mother Goose. This outrageous band became a sensation in Australia in the late 1970s and early 1980s through their original, entertaining and energetic live performances. They attracted huge crowds everywhere they played – becoming the top-earning band in Australia in 1977. Mother Goose released three albums on Mushroom Records in Australia and New Zealand, and moved on to the USA where they were contracted to the famous Scotti Brothers’ promotion and recording company in Los Angeles, and in New York to the legendary band manager, Sid Bernstein.
Returning to New Zealand in 1981, Stephen played in several Dunedin bands for some years, while raising his family. He was awarded the 1982 APRA Silver Scroll (for songwriting) for his song I Can’t Sing Very Well (released by Mother Goose).
In 1984 he co-founded a multi-media production company which initially produced film clips for bands (including the much-loved video for Pink Frost by the Chills). The company became the leading production company in the South Island of New Zealand – producing thousands of TV commercials videos and CD-Roms over 29 years.
Notwithstanding his parallel careers, songwriting has been and remains his passion and kaupapa. His songs have been played and covered around the world.
The album To the Heartland is a collection of twelve of his most notable songs. They represent his personal experiences and relationships – within the dramatic landscapes of southern New Zealand. He recorded the songs with his old mates Rob Piggott, Denis Gibbins, and John Fielding – in Dunedin 20254 – 2026.
