The Undercurrent presents the Wellington Calling Open Mic!
The Undercurrent is hosting the Wellington Calling Open Mic and we're looking for diverse acts to contribute! Each performer gets the chance to have a six-minute set with a microphone, guitar and piano provided. This is an originals only event. We want to encourage new creative voices to be heard. “We want to provide a positive and encouraging environment for established and fledgling acts to shine in. It's a pretty inspiring place to perform,” says host Steven Hood.
Each performer will need to sign up in person before 7:30pm and registrations of interest need to be emailed to openwandw@gmail.com before July 2.
The feature act is Don Guff, who is proof that the singer-songwriter jag is not the exclusive preserve of the young and foolish - it can also be an excellent means of aging disgracefully. Don's first life in music was from the mid 70s to the mid 80s. Then for the next 30 some years career, mortgage, family, etc took over. Next, once he had reconciled himself to the fact that he was too old for a career in professional football, the only other thing he could think of was to get back into music.
After one of the divorcees of Don and the Divorcees (DatD), headed off to the UK, the trio become the duo Beans and Don, which has now been retired with Don and Beans currently rehearsing a new venture - a 5 piece band to be called The Escape Goats. Don also plays with a different bunch of people as part of The Brooklyns.
