Acoustic folk-funk singer-songwriter Teresa Bergman has been based in Berlin the past 5 years. Having recently releasing her debut album 'Bird of a Feather' with Berlin label Musszo Records, the singer/guitarist is back on Saturday the 20th of Dec in hometown Wellington to present the new repertoire at Meow.
Teresa lives and loves the art of contrast. Warm acoustic guitar tones support a repertoire scattered with folk-tinged wistfulness, playful pop hooks, jazzy scat-acrobatics and funky grooves. As an artist she is savvy but reserved, vibrant but refined; and that combination of adoration she harbours for music together with an incredibly astute vocal approach distinguishes her performances.
Exuberating an Ani Di Franco sense of magnetic sovereignty and straight-up poetic, the singer indulges in dreamlike moments reminiscent of Sophie Hunger and raw emotional outflows heralding the influence of Fiona Apple. According to popular Berlin entertainment Magazine “Zitty” these big-fish in her genre have nothing on Teresa, with only one exception – the big break hasn’t quite come her way yet.
Support on the evening will come from Wellington folk-musician Lucas O'Connell. Lucas plays a beautiful fingerpicking style of guitar, and the music could be compared to that of Nick Drake, early Leonard Cohen, Elliot Smith, or perhaps Paul Simon.
