PatersonNomura aka PWRFL Power (Japan)
Kaz Nomura started his career as a guitarist/vocalist for noise-improv band na, while studying classical music composition at Seattle's Cornish College of the Arts. During the band's two year existence, he toured the US multiple times, performing at some of the oldest improvised music festivals and iconic venues, such as Tonic and Knitting Factory. The following 10 years, Kaz performed solo under the name PWRFL Power. Confusing the audience and even himself, this half-joke singer-songwriter project took him all over the US, Japan, and Korea.
If na was a translation of youthful chaos into musical spontaneity, and PWRFL Power was a series of experiments to aligning twisted humor with equally twisted harmonies over conventional song structures, then PatersonNomura is an improvisational 12-bar fuelled with the essence of delta blues and ADHD.
Since 2004, Kaz has released music under various names on Pax Records (San Francisco), Sockets Records (Washington DC), Catbirds Records (New York), Slender Means Society (Portland), Popular Noise (New York), Impose Records (Brooklyn), and Zombie Forever (Japan). In 2009, he founded his own music label, Half Yogurt, through which he released over 15 artists and organized a handful of Japan tours.
