Four outstanding local musicians who are creating their tomorrow through music will perform in a concert marking the Social Enterprise World Forum (SEWF) to be hosted in Christchurch 27-29 September.
SEWF is an international event inviting social enterprises from all over the world to come together, share wisdom, build networks and discuss how to create a more sustainable future.
The Christchurch Folk Club has been supporting musicians for the past fifty years to create a more sustainable future locally, nationally and internationally. Countless dedicated volunteers have been gifting their time, skill, passion and commitment over the past fifty years to keep acoustic music alive in Christchurch.
The Creating Our Tomorrow Concert will span the generations as it brings together on stage four of our most exceptional performers: Sarah Lawrence, Li’l Chuck, Graham Wardrop and Amiria Grenell.
Sarah Lawrence
At 15 years old, Sarah Lawrence is a singer-songwriter with a style that blends folk with aspects of pop and indie-rock. She gained confidence from first playing her music at the Christchurch Folk Music Club, and has since played for TV and radio around the city. Her poetic lyricism defines many of her songs, and she takes influence from artists such as Daughter, Passenger and Suzanne Vega. Sarah is becoming an accomplished performer and is not to be missed.
Li'l Chuck The One Man Skiffle Machine
is an authentic one man band performing 'good time music with old time style'.
Having spent a lifetime rummaging through the drawers of 1930's - 50's music, Chuck’s mostly original songs are inspired by the sounds of the era - Blues, Early Jazz, Western Swing, Ragtime etc. and are uniquely presented in the style of street performers from those glory days. Sticking to the traditional one man band format, Chuck plays all the instruments simultaneously.
In an age where we are rushing around at breakneck speed, where everything is instant, sugar coated, airbrushed and overly polished, Li’l Chuck brings us down to earth with some organic, all natural, whole grain, naked goodness.
Graham Wardrop
2016 was a ‘gypsy year’. I wandered the globe while my home was being rebuilt after the 2011 Christchurch earthquakes. I did my ninth tour of Canada, seven weeks playing festivals and concerts alongside some of Canada’s top songwriters and musicians - The Stan Rogers Songwriters Festival in Canso, Nova Scotia; the Canterbury Folk Festival in Ingersoll, Ontario; the Island Folk Festival, Vancouver
Island and The Salt Spring Island Music and Garlic Festival (yes, Garlic), were highlights. At home the Waiheke Island International Jazz Festival and the Queenstown Jazz Festival were highlights.
Now, back home in Christchurch, 2017 will be more home-based, with more recording, now that I have my studio set up again, and hopefully some guitar building…
Amiria Grenell
New Zealand new-folk luminary Amiria Grenell recently released her third album through her own label ‘Quiet Bird Records’. The stunning album ‘Autumn’ departs from her second album, the Tui Award winning ‘Three Feathers’.
Hailing from a large musical family (her father is the country legend, John Grenell), she has spent the past 10 years performing extensively around the country, a regular at arts festivals, and as a member of the ‘Fly My Pretties’ cast. As well as organizing her own tours, she also performs in folk duo ‘The Swan Sisters’ and as children’s entertainer ‘Mea the musical pixie’. Recently, she relocated back to a valley in Canterbury, closer to family and friends.

VENUE: Irish Society Hall, 29 Domain Terrace, Spreydon
The hall is situated up the long driveway, directly next to Domain Park, and there is plenty of well-lit off-street parking.
