Gig Information

Gender stereotypes suck, colonisation is awful and capitalism is the worst - Pōneke’s Housewitches lay down the truth in Animal Husbandress, their debut album. The quartet bring together indignation and infectious dance hooks to create an effervescent fuzzy pop album of 11 blistering tracks.

The album spans topics ranging from the very global – gender issues, colonisation and the perils of nostalgia – to the hyper-local: opposition from car owners to a well-implemented cycle path in Kilbirnie. All the songs, videos, artwork and recordings have been done by the band, channelling their DIY spirit.

The name of the album is a lyric from their song “Man the Station,” which explores how much of the English language is rooted in the idea that masculinity is the default. In 2021 our language can feel at best, clumsy and inadequate, and at worst, exclusive and oppressive.

Animal Husbandress follows on from their track “Damned Eels,” which was a finalist in the international Eurofishion Song Contest for World Fish Migration Day.

Come and dance with Housewitches at the Common Room in Hastings, Saturday 24 April!
Lead singer Bridget is especially excited to come back to her hometown of Hastings and boogie the night away!

About Housewitches
Housewitches will make you dance and make you check your privilege (as well as their own). Born in 2018, the band started life as a push-bike gang comprising Bridget, Rory and Micheline. Esther, also a member of Tidal Rave, brought her anti-patriarchal swagger and a second guitar to the union the following year.
