Gig Information

It's been almost a year, and SDS is back performing in their hometown of Ōtautahi!
The crew will be weaving their soulful, funkesque, art pop & alt-rock for your soles and souls to get moving to.

SOMEBODY DO SOMETHING is a meeting of stories. We blend our diverse backgrounds of classical, metal, jazz and pop into a soundworld of soul-fuelled, funky alt-rock, art-pop and R&B. We weave together violin and sax with delicious husky vocals, bringing some liquid grooves to your ears and spirit. We tell stories of consent, hitch-hiking tales, soul journeys, love and saving this space rock we all live on. Come nourish your wairua with us and get your body and spirit flowing with some grooves. Our members come from all over Aotearoa, from Invercargill to Ōtautahi, to Portland Oregon and together we create the soundscape that is Somebody Do Something.

“This is the closest we will get to 21st Century sophisti-pop...this compact EP is an impressive debut from Somebody Do Something and shows plenty of glimpses of the sound they have been perfecting on stage...this EP represents an admirable take-off point for an exciting collective of musicians...an absolute banger of a song” - Sam Smith (NZ Musician)

- SDS Recent Highlights:
2023: Rolling Meadows, AUM, OHO and Ōtautahi Smoke Festival Lineups
2023: 'Archives' EP Live-tracked at the iconic Mussell Inn in Onekaka
2023: 'As Rome Burns' Album released
2023: Nationwide tours of North and South Islands

The evening will also feature special guest Calla coming from Auckland for the gig. Classical training meets modern bass music; Calla’s vocal and violin looping, ambient keys, combined with heavy bass, and gritty electronic production leaves audiences utterly spellbound.

Calla is a force of nature wielding unique musical skill as a spiritual spellcaster capturing audiences in a suspended time-rift. A master of the human-voice-as-instrument, electronic musician, violinist, and pianist, Calla is one of those people for whom music is not a pond lightly dabbled in, but an ocean that she calls home. It’s not so much that she plays music; it simply pours out of her. Expect elements of operatic vocals, heavy bass, and hommages to the worlds of folk, pop, and cinema epics. If music is the language of the soul then Calla speaks truth in many tongues.

- Calla Recent Highlights:
2023 LUMA Emerging Artist
2023 17 Show National Tour
2022/23 Festivals; Twisted Frequency, Circulation, Whare Flat
Folk Festival, Dunedin Winter Solstice, Burning Horse
2022 Dame Malvina Major South Island Arts Excellence Award
