A Concerto Collection – CORO plays in Chamber
In mid-October, in Alexandra and Wanaka, join soloists, Ralph Miller (trumpet) and Jacqui Hopkins
(bassoon) with an orchestral ensemble under baton of Ashley Hopkins to hear the Central Otago Regional Orchestra present:
Concerto Saint Marc in Eb for trumpet (T. Albinoni arr. M. Rondeau)
Concerto in Eb for trumpet (J.B. Neruda arr. M Rondeau)
Concerto for bassoon in F major (F. Jiranek)
Ralph Miller began his musical career in the Saturday Morning Music Classes in Dunedin and currently is the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra’s Principal Trumpet. His journey has led him to play a very wide range of music. This includes brass bands, Dunedin City Jazz Orchestra, reggae and blues. He has played in five different countries. In this concert series in Alexandra and Wanaka, we have the opportunity to hear him playing in chamber on his special Eb trumpet. This instrument is slightly smaller and higher (a 4th) than the usual Bb version. It is often used for concertos/solos and other older orchestral works, because it has a lighter sound and sits in a more comfortable range. As well as that, the exact instruments these pieces were originally written for don't tend to exist anymore!
Ralph has turned full circle with his music, having started teaching with the SMMC where he hopes to inspire another generation of trumpet players.
Producing the deep mellow tones of the bassoon has been Jacqui Hopkins passion since her teens. Her musical relationship with this instrument was developed through studies and experiences at Auckland University. She has played bassoon semi-professionally for many years, teaching being her main profession. She has been associated with Mercury Opera Orchestra, Dunedin Sinfonia, Auckland Philharmonia, and many other smaller groups. She is still currently involved professionally with Dunedin Symphony Orchestra and Opus Orchestra (Waikato).
The string orchestra who will accompany our soloists will be complimented by a harpsichord continuo.
The CORO players in this group are looking forward to supporting our soloists.
Another special guest, Sherry Shelton, will entertain our audience with her outstanding keyboard skills not only providing the harpsichord continuo (as above) but performing as soloist. In Alexandra, she is playing Franz Lizst’s Étude in D flat on piano and, in Wanaka, in an entirely different style on keyboard you will hear Steinway Boogie, by J M Stevens.
Sherry has a wealth of professional musical experience, both nationally and internationally, having been the Director of Music and Organist for many large churches and cathedrals in the USA and retired in the recent past from Saint Patricks Cathedral in Auckland.
A dectet of CORO players will present Movement 1 from Brandenburg Concerto No.3 by J.S.Bach and move on to having a lot of fun presenting a Playful Pizzicato from the Simple Symphony by Benjamin Britten.
The Brandenburg Concerto No.3 is one of six instrumental works which are considered some of
the best orchestral compositions of the Baroque era.
A flute quartet has been formed from the strong flute section in CORO and they will combine to produce silvery sounds in Anton Reicha’s Sinfonico for Four Flutes (Andante and Minuet movements).
Then it’s off to sea with Song of the Wellerman, traditional, arr. Kate Agiorotis and Seafarer by Herman Beeftink.
