Here's Five: Joe Pug

Here's Five: Joe Pug

Friday 7th October, 2016 1:09PM

The third annual Southern Fork Americana Fest will see Joe Pug rolling into town next week to perform a one-off Auckland show with Robert Ellis. We're lucky to have Joe on visit shores, the Austin native considered calling it quits on music in 2013 after a relentless four-year touring schedule took its toll. Thankfully, after some respite, Joe scooped himself and went on to record his third studio album Windfall, which was released in 2014 which was met with positive reviews.

More recently Joe has launched a monthly podcast 'The Working Songwriter' in which he sits down with some inspiring songwriters to pick their brains. Here he's shared five favourite songs from recent guests (which includes Hayes Carll who is also appearing at Americana Fest)...

1. Joe Ely - 'All Just To Get To You'

If the background vocals on the studio version of this song sound familiar, that's because they were sung by one of Joe Ely's most ardent fans, Bruce Springsteen.

2. Tift Merritt - 'Are You Still In Love With Me'

This song is a reminder that simplicity can often be a writer's most powerful tool. When a simple song like this is paired with Tift's gorgeous tenor, the effect is devastating. Don't listen to this song too soon after a break-up.

3. James McMurtry - 'Hurricane Party'

Who knew that the existential dread of isolation could be so damn funny? It should be no surprise though, considering James is the son of wry American novelist Larry McMurtry. My favourite couplet from the song: "Just a fleeting glimpse / Of that rare suspense / I once thought made the world go 'round".

4. Hayes Carll - 'Chances Are'

This song could have credibly been written in 1965 and sung George Jones. Recently it was covered by Lee Ann Womack and earned Hayes a Grammy nod for Best Country Song.

5. Slaid Cleaves - 'I Bet She Does'

This is the perfect kiss-off song. It reminds me of some of the brutal, acidic songs from the early Dylan albums, except the arrangement is more laid back.

Joe Pug will be performing alongside Robert Ellis on Wednesday 12th October as part of the Southern Fork Americana Fest at The Tuning Fork in Auckland. Head over here for more information.

ALSO, Hayes Carll, who features on this list will be performing at the festival this Saturday 8th October. Head over here for details on that show.
