Weekly Round Up: Friday 1st December
As we head into the summer party season the tour announcements and great releases keep coming strong. Big news for the week included US atmospheric black metallers Wolves In The Throne Room will be visiting New Zealand for the first time ever this April, and Japan’s King Brothers are coming back to Aotearoa for shows this February, this time alongside fellow countrymen The Vottones.
Tauranga ’s annual Woodcock Festival announced its final epic lineup for the foreseeable future, and Christchurch independent label Melted Icecream Records shared the lineup for their annual Better Living 2017 festival. It's been a great week for dwellers on the dark side, other metal acts heading our way early next year include US animal right activists Cattle Decapititation and Swiss metal duo Bölzer. In advance of the upcoming visit from stoner-rock legends Sleep, Kerry Buchanan provided an in-depth look at their iconic album Dopesmoker.
We premiered Auckland indie-soul artist Sal Valentine’s booty shaking new video, and we were stoked to premiere actor/musician Troy Kingi’s sophomore album of cosmic soul. Local releases that floated our boat included Auckland producer Hasji’s debut ‘Grove’ EP, Executive Zone’s hypnotic new single and video, a brutal new single from Wellington metallers Bulletbelt, the witchy new song from psychedelic duo Earth Tongue, and a blazed new track from Dunedin doom merchants Bottle.
New Zealand hosted a tonne of great shows over the last week. Our crack photography team captured highlights from Sex Pistols bassist Glen Matlock’s Wellington show, Canadian indie-pop star Feist’s performance at Auckland’s Powerstation, Japanese punk legends Guitar Wolf’s wild show at Whammy Bar, legendary punk drummer Marky Ramone's San Fran gig, and Canadian futurist The Weeknd’s epic performance at Spark Arena.
Our Caught Live video for this week features LA artist Moses Sumney who’ll visiting Aotearoa this January for Laneway Festival 2018. Check out footage below of Sumney performing stripped back versions his songs ‘Doomed’, ’Quarrel’ and ’Plastic’ for an NPR Tiny Desk Concert…
