Auckland electronic hip hop four-piece Yoko-Zuna have unveiled a powerful video for 'Minority', their collaborative single with Berlin-based neo-soul artist Noah Slee, drawn from the group's brand new album Voyager. Described as a song written in support of minorities of all kinds, 'Minority' is accompanied by a cinematic video directed by Corey Fleming and Yoko-Zuna drummer Swap Gomez (of production company March Man) who moved to Aotearoa from Bangladesh at the age of five, and has volunteered at Auckland's Mangere Refugee Resettlement Centre for the past decade. Shot in scenic locations including Tongariro National Park, Whakapapa, the Desert Road, Waiuku, and Horopito Motor Junk Yard, the sci-fi clip shows children questing through a visually stunning landscape, seeking to remake their haunted world. Swap Gomez and Noah Slee both shared statements about the contemplative audio-visual work...

“Children are born without the ability to judge, and we thought that using this idea would be a perfect way to tell the story of ‘Minority’. In the video, two kids hold the keys to the future of the planet, and are the guardians of the earth. Humanity is gone, after we, the current generation, have ruined it by judging and hurting each other. The kids have the power to reset the world, and do so with the hope that humanity can re-start and be better.

With his lyrics, Noah is saying something that is really important, not just to him but to us and everyone. We felt like the visuals needed to do justice to the vocals and the message and hopefully we managed to accomplish that.” - Swap Gomez

“To have been able to sit down with the guys and discuss the themes explored makes the collaboration even more unique. ‘Minority’ is a song for everyone to soak in and reflect on – it is a voice for the voiceless. I am excited for everyone to see the beautiful visuals and will be full circle to maybe perform this one day.” - Noah Slee

Yoko-Zuna are playing an album release party at Auckland’s Raynham Park Studio on Friday 30th November.

'Voyager' is out now on limited edition vinyl and digitally via LOOP / KOBALT.
