Tom Young Shares Single 'Waiting For A Smile To Form'

Orewa-based singer and multi-instrumentalist Tom Young, of dance-pop collective Leisure (whose sophomore LP Twister drops this Friday) and dreamscapers The Melancholies, has continued a stately run of solo releases with his bittersweet latest single 'Waiting for a Smile to Form’. Drawing on the artist's experiences with depression and medication, the song showcases Young's gorgeously ethereal vocal harmonies over crisp minimal keys, with more instrumental colour slowly seeping in as the tune proceeds at its own dreamy pace.

Tom Young explained, "Waiting for a Smile to Form is about being diagnosed with depression and waiting to see if the medication I was prescribed was going to work or not. The diagnosis wasn’t a surprise to me, I knew I didn’t get excited or respond to life the way I noticed other people did; it’s something I had at some point grown used to and didn’t really think about. But recently things got worse and my relationships were starting to suffer. Going to the doctor and talking about mental health in an environment like that was scary for me; but it felt like a ‘make or break’ necessity due to various circumstances. I think I wrote the song the day I started taking my meds.
