Ben Woods Shares Debut Album 'Put'
Ben Woods’ debut collection is like a big, warm, soupy bed that you can’t pull yourself out of. That could be the result of Put being recorded at Radio One in the middle of bitter Dunedin winter last year, with Steven John Marr and Woods making up for the cold by pulling out nine lush, crushed-velvety tracks to thaw themselves out. The Ōtautahi alt-pop, sometimes punk, songwriter has described himself as the poster boy for a new phase of the “Antipodean Gothic”, a Jasmine Gallagher coined term for the certain type of gloomy, cynical music emerging from Christchurch musicians in the last half decade.
Early tracks ‘Marchy’ and ‘Indulge’ don’t entirely rule out the album unfolding into a more upbeat, indie-pop LP, but ‘Lozenge’ is like the stomach-flipping summit before plummeting into delicious gothic grunge and swelling distortion. Woods and band are taking the new collection on the road this month and next, zig-zagging around the country with Ōtepoti alt-folk songwriter Lucy Hunter, plus a wicked register of supports joining them along the way. Sink into Put, and take note of where you can catch it live this spring…
