Listen To Samara Alofa's Debut Album 'Earth Punk'
The debut album from Samara Alofa (Ngati Awa) has landed, a collection dripping with spirit and themes of personal growth. Earth Punk was independently written, recorded and mixed by Samara Alofa, and released in collaboration with Kuini Qontrol, who also represent the likes of Kōtiro, Brown Boy Magik and Coco Solid. Lead single 'Dnt Care' almost immediately shot up the student charts for its compelling melody and silky vocals, and the full-length drop swells through bubbling, dreamy tracks, like an exploration that builds to 'Dnt Care' as the album closer.
Speaking to Kuini Qontrol on the album, the artist delved into the kaupapa of Earth Punk, saying "Lots of the themes of this album draw from the narrative of decolonising the self, returning and relearning, dismantling and unlearning, remembering how to connect and communicate with the unseen realms, the self and the ancestor guides," and credits their great grandmothers as key influences, which we also see reflected in the album's cover art: a Nicole Hunt photograph of Samara Alofa that mirrors a portrait of their great, great grandmother and other "spiritual guides that flow with us through all of eternity". Listen to Earth Punk for self-reflection, self-improvement, or however else the album sparks inspiration, and head over here to find out how you can see Samara Alofa live in Pōneke this December...
