King Sweeties Roll Out Debut EP 'We Are The Bosses'
Living up to their name as both kings and sweeties, Bic Runga and Cass Basil's (Tiny Ruins, Carnivorous Plant Society) two-piece project King Sweeties today unearth their badass debut EP We Are The Bosses. The singles we're already familiar with, 'Let's Just Stay In Bed', 'Lydia', and 'Tonight We Could Go Out Dancing (As if it's the Last)', are in outstanding company on the collection, bookended by the previously unheard title track and closing pop number 'Who Wouldn't Want To Be In Love'. The tight-knit, independent nature of the EP process finds We Are The Bosses bound with a thick, bass-heavy glue, and a dedication to experimentation amongst faultless grooves. Personal favourite (for now) 'Who Wouldn't Want To Be In Love' asks that question over and over with no clear sincerity or irony, while the bass in this track takes its place front and centre, right alongside Basil and Runga's buzzy, sibilant vocals. As revealed in her recent interview with UTR, Runga recorded, engineered and produced the EP independently from her home studio The Box, with Kody Nielson (Unknown Mortal Orchestra) on mixing and Brian Gardner on mastering. Once Runga recovers from her own recent Aotearoa tour, here's hoping King Sweeties book in some live shows ASAP. This EP is purpose built for a boogie...
