Listen To Trioglodyte's 'Jazz From The Underground Nightclubs Of Aotearoa' Volumes 1 and 2

Chris Cudby / Thursday 22nd July, 2021 2:17PM

Superbly named Aotearoa independent imprint Kiwijahzz has stepped onto the scene with two staunchly adventurous collections from Tāmaki Makaurau modern jazz super team Trioglodyte. Laid down live at their monthly residency night at The Wine Cellar, volume one of Jazz from the Underground Nightclubs of Aotearoa showcases the core trio Jeff Henderson, Eamon Edmundsen-Wells and Chris O'Connor with special guests Crystal Choi (Phoebe Rings), Bonnie Stewart and Paul Taylor radically reimagining time-honoured classics by Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk and Dollar Brand, plus free-form excursions into the unknown, while volume two welcomes on board Kat Tomacruz, Brett Adams and Bonnie Stewart to perform "an eclectic mix of Colombian Rebajadas, Angolan Soul and jazz classics by Dewey Redman and John Coltrane."

Recorded by Rohan Evans and mastered by Jimmy Solórzano, both volumes sport colourfully geometric abstract cover artwork by percussionist and painter Julian Dyne, available soon in limited cassette editions that this listener will be copping later in 2021. Word on the street is more releases from Kiwijahzz are on the way — feast your ears upon both new albums right here and don't miss Trioglodyte next at The Wine Cellar on 5th August...
