Release Roundup: Jonathan Bree, Current Bias, Yon Loader, Dole Bludger + More

Chris Cudby / Friday 23rd June, 2023 3:21PM

It's Friday once more and here we are in the Roundup zone, gazing backwards through time ("kia whakatōmuri te haere whakamua / I walk backwards into the future with my eyes fixed on my past") and putting together the jigsaw puzzle pieces of our local musical week. Let's revisit our news coverage of Magic Factory, Vincent H.L, Horn, The Situations, DARTZ, Club Ruby and i.e crazy, then get amongst more fresh local (and related) releases from Jonathan Bree, Current Bias, Yon Loader, jam henderson, Colloidal Heart (Wrought Material), Dole Bludger, and Construction Sound Effects New Zealand from Free To Use Sounds.

Bemasked musical maestro Jonathan Bree unveiled a new video from his new album Pre-Code Hollywood (featuring the legendary Nile Rogers of Chic), hitting the beach with a rambunctious pooch in a heartwarming clip, directed / edited by long-term creative partner Princess Chelsea.

Playing a back to back set with Uber Driver at Te Whanganui-a-Tara's Keepsakes' party on 30th June (tickets HERE), electronic producer Current Bias dropped the second volume of their 4 Clangerz 4 Fake Capital series — "...this time around we are graced with the Crisps and Crunchies Edition. This bunch of edits have managed to keep from going stale on the disk image so whilst the moment fresh they ought to be eaten all up!"

"Attention members of Aotearoa emo club, new track alert" declare Papaiti Records, who have today unveiled the latest tune from James Stuteley (Carb on Carb, How Get) and Harry Lilley's (First Move) collaborative Yon Loader project — featuring vocals by Will Roud, drums by Tommy Wroe and cello by Olivia Grace Wilding (Recitals). Their self-titled debut album is out on 26th July, preorders are available from today.

On a mellow tip, Ōtepoti "quasi-surf-indie-rock" songwriter jam henderson unveils his new single 'new walls' following an expansive recent summer tour with fellow travellers L. Hotel.

Operating out of Tāmaki Makaurau, subterranean sonic purveyors Wrought Material have unveiled their first international release. Listen up to the charred, remorselessly intense lead track from Naarm / Melbourne-based black metal duo Colloidal Heart's debut collection Incarnations Of, inventively threading through elements of Memphis rap on 'Body Clock'.

The latest release from Te Whanganui-a-Tara ruckus punk brutalists Razored Raw, Dole Bludger's four "song" Demonstration Tape takes a drill to your earholes with such slamming numbers as 'Destructive Instinct' and the topical 'Ram Raid'. If you snoozed on grabbing a physical copy when it launched late last week, too bad as it's already sold out slowpoke.

From the team that brought you Rainstorm and Wind Sound Library New Zealand, Free To Use Sounds' new Construction Sound Effects New Zealand finds beauty in aural abrasiveness. "When we embarked on our train journey from Auckland to Wellington, we were initially intrigued by the surprisingly affordable booking of our AirBnB. Its prime location near the main train station and Wellington City Center seemed too good to be true. Little did we know that the answer lay just outside our window, a mere 10 meters away — a bustling construction site. The towering high-rise building under construction echoed with the symphony of activity, a chorus of hammering, drilling, and heavy machinery".
