Karl Sölve Steven Shares 'All of Human Emotion on Microfiche (The Remixes)'

Teased over the last few months yet kept tantalisingly out of reach until today, Karl Sölve Steven (Queen Neptune, The Drab Doo-Riffs, Supergroove) has lifted the veil on All Of Human Emotion On Microfiche (The Remixes), revisiting and reimagining tunes from his 2022 debut solo album. Based in Pārāwai (Thames), the multi award-winning film composer invited some of Aotearoa's finest electronic artists to put their own spin on his works, nearly all of whom will be joining Steven at the official release show at Tāmaki Makaurau's The Wine Cellar and Backroom on 21st July.

As expected, the impeccably curated collection thrums with fresh ideas and a purposeful sense of play. New tunes include dungeon synth duo Gayblade's torchlit take on 'Utterance and Inscription', the pulsing minimal synth contemplations of Liam K. Swiggs' 'Acoma (Phase II)' remix, Sonya Waters' haunting and texturally distressed version of 'Freedom Bells', and Grecco Romank's suitably dystopian cyber-jacked rework of 'The Message'. Out today via Sunreturn, treat your ears to All Of Human Emotion On Microfiche (The Remixes) and nab tickets for one of the very best local lineups of 2023 before it's too late...

"... as a whole I was excited and apprehensive about the idea of the remix project, I'm a big fan of all the artists but I was also both scared and embarrassed to give them my musical children to raise.

The Gayblade remix of Utterance and Inscription is somehow at once beautiful and hilarious! It's great to hear how ideas and motifs of The Message are refracted back through the wonderful plurality of heavy industry and Grecco Romank's human voices. If Freedom Bells was to become a hit in another dimension, it's Sonya Water's version that would be playing on the jukebox on the other side of the portal. Liam K. Swiggs has taken my favourite bit of Acoma Phase II, the phasing loop, and cycled it round and round into a club-adjacent banger.

Getting everything back was frankly amazing and super humbling. Everyone's been so incredibly generous, turning these pieces into something vast and imaginative and inspiring. It makes me feel so lucky to share a musical universe with these people; my heartfelt thanks go to them all." — Karl Sölve Steven
