Joe Kaptein Shares New Album 'Pool Sharks'
Tāmaki Makaurau's formidably talented and musically generous Joe Kaptein is an artist who's almost difficult to keep up with, lending his multi-instrumental skills to The Circling Sun, Princess Chelsea's globe-trotting group the Dream Warriors, Bub, The Situations, Crystal Chen's band, power trio AIGHT, and we would bet even more. The community hero's newest project is Jandal Records – banging the drum for "interesting music from Aotearoa" — launching in style today with Pool Sharks, a self-titled debut album from Kaptein's collective with Wil Goodinson, David Harris, Ben Frater, Lukas Fritsch, Andrew Isdale and Finn Scholes.
Easing listeners in with the sparkling sonic bubblebath of lead single 'Sleepy Space Cadet', we travel through a veritable solar system of tunes on Pool Sharks. As one might hope, 'Herb Albert' delivers an abundance of brassy goodness, the spacey boogie of 'Sunday Arvo I' accurately conveys how I feel when sipping on a weekend coffee, the ten minute 'Second Wind' and gently grooving 'Five Stone Sourdough' feel radiant, blissful and energising, 'Sunday Arvo II' sounds adjacent to UMO's IC-02 Bogotá in its rhythmic psychedelia, I could listen to an whole album of the frenetic fusion hinted at on 'Twelve Foot Taco', and the nearly nine minute 'Cascade' sticks the landing with huge soul-funk swagger.
Refreshingly playful and masterful in equal measure, crank up Pool Sharks, nab the limited vinyl LP from good record stores or order it HERE, go catch Joe Kaptein and Pool Sharks' two night release residency at The Apartment on Karangahape Road, and look forward to even more from Jandal Records...
