Watch Fables' Video For New Single 'Sundown'
The songwriting moniker of Tāmaki Makaurau's Jess Bailey, Fables' brand new single 'Sundown' is a first taste of her long-awaited debut album Change is a Slow-Moving Beast, out next year via Home Alone Music. A languorous and luminous folk-pop ballad, pondering the orbiting balance of personal distance and intimacy, director Finn Johansson and DoP Annabel Kean (Sports Team) imbue the song with a magical golden glow in their accompanying domestic visuals, made with support from NZ On Air.
Fables has a pair of release gigs lined up for this week and Johansson will soon be donning his own songwriter's hat, playing the following weekend at the constellation of talent that is 605 Morningside's Primer. Bailey unpacked the racing mind origins of 'Sundown'...
“I actually wrote Sundown on a mattress on the floor, couch surfing in the wake of a separation. For me, idle hands make for an unsettled mind, made worse in the early hours of the morning. Too tired to be awake, too awake to sleep — this poem fell out of me and into my notes app. The intent was to capture a moment when you find yourself somewhere, with someone that feels safe and comfortable, when you both talk about how you could end up intertwined together, but choose to maintain the space between and leave some room for yearning rather than become entangled."
