Tāmaki Makaurau's "consummate professionals" Crook launched their debut album Murderous Intent late last week. The team of Aki (Girls Pissing on Girls Pissing, Horror in Clay), Hugh (Alec, Caroles), Fraser (Heroes for Sale, Juiceroof) and Aaron (Saturnian Noise Collective, The Pleasure Majenta), Crook blast well beyond post-punk into vertiginous realms of noise-scrape-pummel, happily reminding this listener of (for example) the more aggro end of the '00s Load Records roster.

The group's malevolent yet playfully layered textures — sometimes threatening to dirge deeply into free-form zones — and Aki's full throttle yowls present a poetical and pitiless view of our current hellscape era across six tracks, including recent SRN hits 'Shoving' and 'Language 2.0', alongside fresh bangers such as 'Shitcunts Lament' and 'Suburban Yipping'.

Out via new local independent imprint T & M Productions, hosts of the ongoing series of Mercury Lane Alleyway gigs, Crook are soon embarking on a full-scale Murderous Intent launch tour. They've also jumped on the bill for a July gig at Whammy Bar with Australian dungeon synth artist Tir, Necropolis and Terrow, so crank up Murderous Intent and go catch Crook in the flesh...
