Watch Delaney Davidson's Video For New Single 'Tumbleweed' ft. KOMMI
"The rules aren't the rules anymore." Lyttelton icon Delaney Davidson has been keeping us on our toes during the ramp up to his eleventh studio album Baby Heavyweight, setting sail into the world in full this coming Friday. His new single 'Tumbleweed' is a collaboration with 2025 Silver Scroll co-winner KOMMI (Kāi Tahu, Te-Āti-Awa) — who co-wrote Marlon Williams' Te Whare Tīwekaweka — whose growling te reo rap lyricism intertwines with booming low end, body-moving beatwork and Davidson's signature golden-tones. The pair conjure a club-pumping sound maybe familiar to those who've partied late at Ōhinehou's Port Noise festival.
The accompanying short film for the playful tune is likewise a collaboration between Falling Films, Martin Sagadin and Chris Reddington, made with support from NZ On Air. Featuring streetwise scenes of the duo and smokey footage of an amazing looking train set inherited by Davidson in action, elevate this rainy old week with 'Tumbleweed', preorder Baby Heavyweight from good record stores, and join the artist with band on their album tour this July...
"The miniature footage of the train is all my dads train set that I ended up inheriting. I remember thinking I am sure I can do something with this.
We spent some time in old childhood haunts of mine. Woolston railway tracks and the Port Hills. It’s amazing how many old threads are woven through this song and how much of it feels like rediscovering things in a new context.
Tumbleweed started in the old house I first moved to in Switzerland. It used to belong to my great Aunty in law and is now the Kendra Jane Patrick Gallery. Beginning with the rhythms of Tone Loc I worked with Pierre Omer (originally from the Dead Brothers), and it grew to be a representation of fresh beginnings and the idea of there always being a new opportunity."
