Watch Hine's Video For 'OVER THE BONES'
Ōtaki songwriter / multi-instrumentalist Gigi Crayford (Kahungunu, Tūwharetoa, Raukawa) aka Hine's keenly awaited debut EP KA MUA KA MURI will be out this Friday, a five waiata collection interweaving taonga pūoro, jazz-folk arrangements, and reflective te reo Māori / English lyricism. Showcasing "songs for different Atua Wahine including Hinetakurua, Hine Raukatauri, Hinemoana, Hine Nui te Pō / Murirangawhenua & Papatūānuku", the EP's second single 'OVER THE BONES' is dedicated "He waiata tēnei mō ngā tūpuna (To the legacies and lessons of our ancestors)".
Layering new black and white imagery of Crayford — filmed at Staglands in Akatarawa by Mumu Moore — with footage sourced from Archives NZ (explained below), edited together by the artist herself, traverse time and memory with Hine's new video for 'OVER THE BONES'. Be sure to catch her winter release tour, starting this Saturday in Tāmaki Makaurau...
"He waiata tēnei mō ngā tūpuna. To the legacies and lessons of our ancestors.
This is a music video made with a combination of contemporary footage and Creative Commons Archival footage from Archives NZ. I have sought counsel from various avenues including TOI IHO and reached out to many people to find out who the footage kaitiaki may be. I have received consent for use of some of the footage in this video but despite my best efforts there were some that were not found. I do not claim kaitiakitanga or ownership over any of the archival footage. It is with humility and aroha that I weave in these taonga. If you are a kaitiaki of one of these and wish to kōrero about this video, you can get in touch with me at gigi@hinemusicnz.com. The photos included are of my whānau tūpuna. Their names are Mere Riripeti Whakaraurahi Porangi, George Down, Maria Ngarita Floyd Down, Emily Floyd, Matewai Wickham, Olga Delaney."
